Advocacy

We advocate for grandparent carers on an individual and systemic level.

We know that grandparent carers face many challenges. GCWA utilises the power of a collective voice to assist grandparent carers. GCWA offers a space to share lived experiences and access pathways of support. On a federal and state policy level our members inform decision makers about what needs to change so grandparent carers and their grandchildren can be better supported.

Individual advocacy

GCWA understands that many people in our community are facing multiple challenges.

Many grandparent carers need urgent assurance, information, and support. They often need help navigating government services and supplying identification to access schools and medicare. We do what we can to advise individuals and share what we’ve learnt about how to access what’s needed as easily as possible.

Systemic advocacy

In 2021, GCWA President Jan Standen become WA Senior of the Year and is in the running for 2022 Senior Australian of the Year.

Our Fairer Future campaign directly hits the inboxes of politicians and political parties all around the country and last year a WA Parliamentary Friends of Grandparent Carers group was launched. We meet with members of parliament, departmental decision makers, non profit allies, and Ministers to advocate directly to those with power to influence policy changes. Our members stories have been featured on national and prime time radio asking for change and talking about GCWA.
